Uncovering your individuality: 10 fascinating fingerprint facts

Here are a few things you might not know about your fingerprints:

1. The official scientific name for your fingerprints is “dermatoglyph”. This comes from two ancient Greek words, derma meaning skin, and gluphikós meaning sculpted.

2. Your fingerprints never change. Even as the rest of your skin changes with age, your fingerprints stay the same for life. That means your fingerprint pendant will always stay a perfect representation of you.

3. There are three main types of fingerprint patterns – the whorl, the loop and the arch.

4. About 60% of people have loop fingerprints, and about 35% have whorls. Only 5% of people have arches, making them the rarest type of fingerprints in the world.

5. Fingerprints play an important role in your sense of touch, because they’re very sensitive to the surface textures of different objects. They help you feel everything from silk and velvet to your pet’s fur or your loved one’s skin.

6. The ridges of your fingerprints also make it easier to grip and hold onto everyday objects.

7. Fingerprints follow an arrangement called the “Turing pattern”, which is the same phenomenon as other patterns found in nature, like leopard spots and zebra stripes.

8. Even identical twins have different fingerprints! That means there’s nobody in the world with the same fingerprints as yours.

9. In ancient China, fingerprint impressions were used as proof of a person’s identity as early as 300 BC – long before modern-day detectives were using them as evidence.

10. Chimpanzees also have fingerprints, and so do koala bears!
